Meta’s Conductor Buy Turns AI Coding Into a Battle for the Control Layer
Meta sees orchestration—not merely smarter models—as the next leverage point in AI coding, while rivals are making parallel bets on the tools that store, run and manage AI-generated software.
Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup founded in 2024 that lets software engineers deploy multiple coding agents across parallel workspaces. The deal’s price was not disclosed, and Meta declined to provide further detail beyond confirming the acquisition.1
Conductor’s pitch is less about creating another coding model than coordinating an increasingly crowded machine room. Its platform can put agents from outside labs, including Anthropic and OpenAI, to work on separate parts of a software project at once. Founder and CEO Charlie Holtz announced: “Conductor is joining Meta,” adding that the company had “big, crazy plans for the next interface.”1
That focus puts Meta squarely in a broader contest for developers—the AI industry’s most valuable power users. Axios reported that Conductor’s product development pace and emphasis on developer experience are expected to help Meta build its next generation of coding products. The strategic wager is that the winner will not simply offer the sharpest agent, but make it practical to manage “armies” of them.2
The timing sharpens the rivalry. On the same day, OpenAI said it planned to acquire Pierre Computer, which focuses on storing and managing AI-generated code; it had already announced plans in June to acquire Ona, a cloud-based coding-environment and agent-orchestration startup.2 Meta, meanwhile, launched its own Muse Code agent in August and has been pushing its wider AI agent lineup after years of trailing the field in consumer-facing AI services.1
For existing Conductor users, the takeover brings a near-term disruption alongside the longer-term promise. The company’s cloud service will shut down on November 20 and user cloud data will then begin to be deleted, though its core features are expected to keep operating until early next year. Another report said Conductor Cloud becomes read-only on November 13, while the local product is due to receive models and critical fixes until early 2027.3 The race for AI coding’s control layer is accelerating—but Conductor’s customers will first have to navigate its transition into Meta.
