China’s humanoid robots arrived at Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games with a headline-grabbing promise: machines that could outrun and outjump humanity. By the end of opening day, the spectacle had also supplied a blunt reminder that speed is not the same thing as readiness.
The five-day competition opened Saturday at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, with organisers saying more than 2,000 humanoids would take part in 51 events, from running and football to table tennis, weightlifting and tug-of-war. The Games coincided with the World Robot Conference, turning the capital into a showcase for China’s push to lead a sector increasingly caught in U.S.-China technology tensions.
Organisers and manufacturers said Beijing-based X-Humanoid machines posted 9.39 seconds in the 100 metres — faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record — and cleared 2.88 metres in a standing high jump, beyond Javier Sotomayor’s 2.45-metre record. Ahead of the opening, Honor said its robot Lightning had run a 9.32-second trial. Spectator Li Yanfeng said the machines were “evolving rapidly,” while another visitor called it “amazing” that robots could perform familiar human sports.1
Then came the harder part: stopping. Several fast-moving robots slammed into a blue padded wall at the end of the track; some lost limbs, and teams carried damaged machines away on stretchers. One robot briefly caught fire before being put out. The scenes illustrated the industry's central divide: dazzling demonstrations and rapidly improving athletic movement on one side, still-unproven reliability in ordinary settings on the other.2
Elon Musk amplified the Honor result in a repost, noting that Lightning ran 100 metres in 9.32 seconds. The accompanying post’s real praise was more revealing than the time itself: after crashing into a safety barrier, it had not suffered a catastrophic failure, with “its waist implode” or sparks flying.

The Beijing Games therefore offered two narratives at once. China has produced machines capable of extraordinary, heavily staged feats; the crashes showed why experts still see widespread real-world deployment as a longer race.1
