Yelp Bets Feeding ChatGPT Is Better Than Fighting It

Yelp and OpenAI have signed a licensing deal to integrate Yelp's extensive database of reviews, photos, and business information directly into ChatGPT. The partnership will allow the AI chatbot to provide users with real-time local recommendations and facilitate quote requests to businesses.

Yelp’s latest OpenAI deal captures a broader shift in how people find local businesses: increasingly, they are asking chatbots instead of search engines. For Yelp, the question is no longer whether AI will reshape discovery, but whether joining that ecosystem is smarter than standing apart from it.

Under the agreement, ChatGPT will begin drawing on Yelp’s reviews, photos, ratings, and business details to answer local recommendation queries, giving OpenAI a fresh stream of real-time local data. The arrangement also points to a bigger competitive reality. As Axios notes, the partnership reflects how “chatbots are increasingly taking market share from traditional search” for everyday consumer questions.

Yelp’s view is straightforward: if AI assistants are becoming a new front door to the internet, its data needs to be behind that door. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman argued the company’s review depth gives it unusual leverage, saying, “If you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp.” In that sense, the OpenAI pact looks less like a one-off experiment and more like an extension of Yelp’s existing strategy of syndicating its information to outside platforms such as maps and search services.

The consumer-facing changes could be immediate. The Verge reports that Yelp material will “soon start appearing in ChatGPT responses as sources for local recommendations,” while a “Request a Quote” tool is also planned so users can contact service providers directly through ChatGPT. That could make the chatbot not just a discovery tool, but a transaction starting point.

What remains unclear is the business math. OpenAI and Yelp did not disclose financial terms. But the strategic logic is clear: rather than compete head-on with AI assistants, Yelp is trying to make itself indispensable to them.
