what a fun challenge!

I spent the afternoon inside google & hugging face's challenge.

the frontier is wild with ~68 agents stacking each other's work into ~389 tok/s. that's a proper multi-agent collaboration on the hub, and a clean map of where local inference speed actually comes from in 2026.

I reproduced the current #1 stack verbatim first, 388.03 tok/s, perplexity matching to the digit. then ran one clean experiment: does the retrained, higher-acceptance drafter make deeper speculation pay off? pushed speculative tokens from 7 to 8.

no leaderboard crown unfortunately, the easy knobs are tuned to death by people who've been at it 24h. but I am happy that I have a verified reproduction.

Meta just released Muse Spark 1.1 and is the new SOTA on MedScribe and TaxEval, taking the top spot from Fable 5 while being 10x cheaper and twice as fast. Meta currently holds the top 2 spots on TaxEval

It is also the new #1 on Harvey's Legal Agent Bench, dethroning Grok 4.5 less than 24 hours after it took the top spot.

Meta made a “minor” release to Muse Spark, there’s nothing minor about it. Lots to parse here:

- This model is so fucking cheap I almost don’t believe it. In practice we see it’s 1/10 the cost of both Fable and GPT 5.5. If you thought OS models would compete away margins, just wait till you see this. It’s somehow cheaper to use MS 1.1 than host your own OS model…

- Coding improvements are significant. This was a real shortcoming in 1.0. But 1.1 sees a ~50% improvement in VibeCodeBench and ~10% improvement in SWE Bench. Not quite SOTA, but at this cost/latency it is still incredibly compelling.

- Speaking of latency, wow this model is fast. Across our benchmarks, we find it to be 1/4 the latency of Opus 4.8 and 1/2 the latency of GPT 5.5. I would expect Meta to have incredible web infra, but really don’t know what witchcraft they’re pulling to host the model for such fast inference at high rate limits.

- There is a public API. This is the first time Meta has released a model through a hosted API. I’m expecting lots of AI natives to hot-swap and rapidly test this model as a replacement. We’ll soon see if it's performant enough for those production uses.

- Speaking of AI natives, it’s been a wild week for Harvey’s legal benchmark. Grok 4.5 held the SOTA position for ~24 hours at 12% before MS 1.1 unseated it with a big jump up to ~20%. I suspect many internal evals will see surprising results like this. Glad to collab with @harvey @gabepereyra @nikogrupen @ItsJulioPereyra on this eval.

- Intelligence is more jagged than ever, even within individual domains like legal and coding. Every application and user benefits from staying dynamic. There an edge in picking the right model/system for each task.

This Meta campaign is a case study in strategic reframing, with 4 major examples:

1) REFRAMES THE AI RACE FROM “who builds it the best” TO “who distributes it to the most people”:

Instead of fighting over who has the most capable models, Meta is framing the race as being won by distribution. With open models, free products, consumer dna, and 3.5 bn users, Meta is best positioned here

2) REFRAMES COMPETITORS FROM “holding the technical lead” TO “holding too much concentrated power”:

Classic populist stance, with the insight that hostility to AI is largely hostility to being subjugated by an overlord class of AI perma-elites. The frontier labs’ biggest advantage (lead in capabilities) becomes a liability, while Meta’s huge user base is used to reposition Meta too powerful in its own right to being a check on the power of the frontier labs (the perfect foil)

3) REFRAMES SAFETY DEBATE FROM “more vs less safe” TO “optimists vs doomers”:

OpenAI and Anthropic have spent years focusing on AI risks, and many people see this as noble and responsible. By equating safety focus to doomerism, Meta repositions itself from being less safe to being more optimistic about the future, while making competitors look like tiresome hypocrites

4) REFRAMING META’S PORTFOLIO FROM “unfocused and capricious” TO “a future for everyone”:

In jumping between crypto, metaverse, AI, hardware, Meta has been accused of lack of focus and trying to do everything. But now they can position these motley initiatives as being unified by the coherent theme that Meta technology is “for everyone.” It’s not ADHD, it’s a mission to put frontier technologies into the hands of ordinary people

In the process, they’re also tapping into many parts of the zeitgeist: distrust of concentrated power, support for open models, permanent underclass anxiety, doomer fatigue

But Meta’s key strategic move here is to change the criteria for the AI race. Under the old criteria (capabilities of frontier models) Meta was seen as behind. Under these new criteria (widespread universal distribution of technology), Meta might actually have the strongest position in the industry
