Google: Schools can keep search while skipping Gemini, but AI search is non-negotiable
Google is technically offering schools more choice but not the choices anyone wants.
TL;DR
- Google's new AI policy for K-12 schools requires schools to opt into AI products, including search, for logged-in student accounts.
- Contrary to initial interpretations, Google will allow schools to disable Gemini apps while keeping search active.
- Schools can choose to disable all AI features, including those within search, but an AI-free search option will not be provided.
- Google views AI as the future of search and is committed to integrating it, refusing to offer a toggle to disable AI tools.
- Educators wanting AI-free search face challenges due to Google's expansive index, though mandated index sharing with competitors might offer future alternatives.
